Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges first published Ficciones in 1944 when he was in his mid-40s. After years of working as a librarian and shying away from writing fiction, Ficciones marked Borges's first major entrance into the fiction world with a collection that is often described as nothing less than genius.
In this collection, Borges builds upon his enviable knowledge of literature, history, criticism, philosophy, math, and much else to create an experimental examination of man's daily life and largest concerns. Although these goals seem impossible, or at least audacious, Borges addresses his material with a sense of humor and a joy in discovery that is evident on the page.
