    Why does the narrator think that it is not interesting to think of the book as an allegory for the divine?

    There a number of answers to this questions. Some possible answers include the following:

    • It seems too simple an answer to the narrator.
    • The idea that the divine incorporates a universalist view toward religion seems heavy-handed or overly simple to the narrator.
    • The figure of Al-Mu’tasim is cartoonish if he is not a realistic man possessing a realistic set of traits. It is both overly simple to portray the divine as cartoonish and impossible to portray the divine as a realistic man, thus this idea creates an impossibility.
