The novel centers around Tish and her family attempting to get her fiance, Fonny, out of a jail. He is in jail for having been falsely accused of raping a Puerto Rican woman, Mrs. Rogers. Though the sexual assault is not described in detail, it is mentioned several times throughout the course of the novel, with the narrator once questioning if the rape even occurred. Emphasize to the students that it is critical that all content is discussed with the utmost respect—the classroom will strictly be a place for respectful, understanding, and compassionate discussion of these issues.
