Aristotle's Poetics Lesson Plan

Relationship to Other Books

Aristotle wrote on a remarkable number of subjects. Students might consider reading Politics, Metaphysics, Rhetoric, Nichomachean Ethics, or Prior Analytics, among many others.

For context, students should consider the work of Plato, particularly the Symposium, and the works of the playwrights and poets whom Aristotle emphasizes in this book. Particularly consider Euripides' Iphigenia plays and Medea, Sophocles' Oedipus plays, Aeschylus's Oresteia, and Homer's Iliad and Odyssey.

More recent interpretations of those plays and poems include Jean Anouilh's Antigone, Derek Walcott's Omeros, Margaret Atwood's The Penelopiad, and Madeline Miller's The Song of Achilles.
