Winesburg, Ohio Lesson Plan

Relationship to Other Books

While Sherwood Anderson wrote other books, such as Dark Laughter (1925) and Poor White (1917), none have the longevity of Winesburg. Other works about small-town life in the United States include Thornton Wilder's Our Town (1938) and works by Sinclair Lewis, especially Babbitt (1922) and Main Street (1920). In modern American literature, the suburb has replaced the small town, and similar themes are explored in works such as Rabbit, Run (1960) by John Updike and the short stories of John Cheever.
