The Joy Luck Club was published in 1989 as Amy Tan’s debut novel. Before the book was released, Tan was working hard as a speech writer, but she felt unfulfilled. This feeling led her to fiction writing. The Joy Luck Club began as a short story titled “Rules of the Game.” Tan initially wanted to write a collection of short stories. However, a critic who reviewed her work suggested a series of interrelated short stories. That is how the book came to be. After publication, it was reviewed and marketed as a novel.
