Man and Superman was written in 1903 and first produced at the Royal Court Theatre in London in 1905. That production, however, cut out the play's third act; the play was not produced in its entirety until ten years later. The play is a somewhat skewed romantic comedy: it enumerates the conflicts that ultimately lead to the iconoclastic gentleman Jack Tanner agreeing to marry his ward and schoolmate Ann Whitefield. To dodge this possibility, however, Jack ends up going on a somewhat wild adventure through Spain with his chauffeur, and (in the notorious third act) meeting a band of socialist outlaws who hold up cars to redistribute wealth, and having an elaborate dream about Don Juan...
