While known more for his plays than his poetry, Christopher Marlowe wrote notable poems and translated several classical works. He translated poems of Ovid and Lucan from first century classical literature: Amores and Pharsalia. Ovid’s Amores is a three-book collection of poems termed elegies, sentimental reflections or laments written to honor the dead. Yet, elegia in Latin refers to any poem written in a certain kind of meter. Ovid’s personal lyrics were formal sections of elegiac couplets detailing the romance between Corinna and a wealthy Roman.
