Introduction to The Rocking-Horse Winner

One of D.H. Lawrence's most celebrated stories, "The Rocking-Horse Winner" follows a young boy who gains the ability to accurately predict winners of horse races by riding his rocking-horse. Although it touches on some of Lawrence's most important themes, such as mother-son relationships, its lean style and mystical plot break from the norm. Despite this fact, "The Rocking-Horse Winner" remains one of Lawrence's most popular stories. Ever since its publication in the July 1926 issue of Harper's Bazaar, it has been heavily anthologized and adapted.
