The Secret Life of Bees, published in 2001, is Sue Monk Kidd's first novel, written after she became famous with several well-regarded works of nonfiction. The novel begins in South Carolina in the summer of 1964, and follows Lily Owens on her transformational journey to discover the truth about her mother's past.
