In comparison with other works in Ismail Kadare's œuvre, Broken April offers less of the subtle allegories and social criticisms that that acclaimed author has become famous for. But it is no less powerful, or vivid, in its description of the charnel houses of history run amok. Broken April brings to bear all of Kadare's stylistic powers, whilst concentrating them on a subject – blood feuds – which is of continuing importance in Albania many years after the book's initial publication.
