Kate Chopin began writing in 1888, after the death of her husband, Oscar. Her first published story, "A Point at Issue!" appeared in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in 1889. Until her death in 1904, Chopin published regularly, both books and stories in periodicals; the stories in this lesson plan are culled from her collections Bayou Folk and A Night in Acadie and from the unpublished volume A Vocation and a Voice. (The stories from this latter volume are often considered "uncollected," since A Vocation and a Voice was rejected by publishers in Chopin's lifetime and many of the stories did not appear until decades after her death.)
