Her

Her Study Guide

Her is a 2013 American romantic science-fiction film directed, produced, and written by Spike Jonze. The film follows Theodore, a lonely man in the final stages of a divorce. His career is writing "beautiful handwritten letters" on behalf of other people, but when he's alone in his home he plays video games. One day, he decides to buy the OS1, which is advertised as the first "Artificially Intelligent Secretary." After using the OS for awhile, he quickly falls in love with "Samantha," the startlingly human and intuitive voice of the OS. After a while, Theodore and Samantha begin a relationship in spite of her not having a body.

The cast of Her includes Joaquin Phoenix as Theodore, Scarlett Johansson as the voice of Samantha, and Rooney Mara as Catherine, Theodore's ex-wife. Her premiered on December 18, 2013, and received considerable acclaim from movie critics and audiences. Some critics weren't as impressed, however. Richard Brody of The New Yorker wrote of the film, "The people he creates are so synthetic, so artificially sweetened, so pure in their maudlin isolation, that it’s hard to know whether he’s satirizing the emptied-out specimens who are condemned to each other, damning the advanced technological powers that have emptied them out, expressing his angelic fantasies of defiled innocence, or merely bumping up against the limits of his imagination."

The film received numerous awards and nominations, primarily for Spike Jonze's screenplay. At the 86th Academy Awards, Her received the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, one of five nominations the film received.
