This section is called "Breaking Gods." On page 1, Papa throws a missal at Mama's figurines, breaking them in pieces. This is one way in which the gods are breaking. Make some predictions about other ways the characters in the book might break with or break from god.

Students will have various answers. They might predict that Kambili will renounce her faith or move out from under her father's influence. They might predict that she rejects her father's god and finds another one. They might predict that she finds a way to put the broken pieces of the figurines back together.
