    Why do you think Obinze's experience seeking a visa is so different from Ifemelu's?

    Students should acknowledge the point in Chapter 23 where Obinze's mother says that Americans no longer want "foreign young men." This places us at a certain point in time—after September 11, 2001—and acknowledges the prejudices inherent to the visa process. Consider also that Obinze knows some immigration officers to be "better" than others; there's a certain randomness to the visa application process, and yet it decides Obinze's fate.
