    What makes it obvious, content-wise, that these stories weren't written today?

    The stories are specifically set in the time they were written. As such, they may seem less scary to students because they rely on fears of a different population. The dark is less frightening with a flashlight on everyone's phones in their pockets. Wilds animals, too, are likely less of a fear. Other hints that the stories were written long ago include the descriptions of the frontier and referring to indigenous Americans as savages.
