    How does the initial image of Estragon struggling to put on his boot set the tone for the rest of the play?

    The image represents the existential struggle: Estragon is deeply concerned with the seemingly unimportant project of putting on his boot. The boot's bad fit could be said to represent the incompatibility of human desires with worldly rewards. Even when he manages to put the boot on, it doesn't make him feel any better, and the struggle is proven to be Sisyphean and repetitive, as Vladimir alludes to when he says, "All my life I've tried to put it from me... and I resumed the struggle."
