A Long Way Gone Lesson Plan

Discussion of Thought Questions

  1. 1

What do you believe Gasemu is referring to on page ninety-two when he talks about the "natural glow" that Beah once had? Why do you think Beah has lost this glow?

Gasemu could be referring to a sense of childlike wonderment and happiness that Beah once had. He refers to the fact that Beah's parents always used to marvel at often often Beah would smile as a baby. Beah's troublesome nature is also a sign of his attitude as a child. He had time to joke around and simply have fun.

The loss of this glow correlates with what Beah believes to be the loss of his innocence and childhood. He no longer has reason to smile, and time to play games. The war took that from him.
