Would you believe the Tucks' story if you heard it outside of a book? Why or why not?

Winnie goes back and forth with how she feels about the Tucks. Are they crazy? What do students think? If they had the same experience as Winnie, is there anything that would convince them one way or the other on whether the Tucks' story was true? Can students think of any reasons why someone would make up a story like this? Perhaps the Tucks are delusional. Perhaps they're villains; maybe they were only telling Winnie this story to cover for kidnapping her. What makes students think otherwise?
