Day 5

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Lesson Plan

Discussion of Thought Questions

  1. 1

Analyze the servant's offer to Gawain to lie to others if Gawain should choose to flee. How does this fit into the invocations of the story of Christ?

This is one of Gawain's last temptations, though it does not carry as much weight as the previous ones, since he has the green girdle. Had Gawain not had the girdle, he might have accepted this offer, just as he accepted and then lied about the girdle. However, this still fits within the comparisons to the story of Christ, as Christ was regularly tempted to abandon his mission on earth and his fate on the cross. Unlike Gawain, though, Christ did not approach the cross with any protection, material or otherwise.
