How does Esteban’s character change between Chapter 1 and Chapter 2?
In Chapter 1, Esteban is a young, love-struck optimist. His character has a hint of innocence and naiveté as he pursues both a fortune and Rosa. His ambition does not change in Chapter 2, but his innocence does. Rosa’s death takes Esteban’s optimist spirit and sense of innocence away. The narrator says Esteban slowly becomes a “barbarian” as he fixes up Tres Marias. He rapes a young girl and forces her to be his servant. He retreats into himself, refusing to build lasting human connections. He is still the ambitious man from the first chapter, but he is hardened and more callous.
