    What is the role of storytelling in The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven?

    Storytelling connects to the theme of time. Storytellers are able to make time fluid rather than strictly linear. Thomas Builds-the-Fire and his grandfather, Samuel, for instance, are able to go back in time in their stories and bring the past forward into the present. Some of Alexie’s narrators are able to go into the future in their imaginations. This may connect to the idea that the American Indians are, as a people, heavily influenced by their past and unsure of their future—a sentiment Alexie expresses in the stories more than once.
