    How are the girls' father and God related in their minds?

    Although it is unlikely Alcott means for Mr. March to act as a one-to-one metaphor for God, it is clear that there is a certain connection to be made between the two figures.

    Ask students to talk about what Mr. March's personality might be like. Despite being a completely absent character at this point in the novel, we have already formed some preliminary opinions on the man: it seems that he acts as a source of encouragement for the family, even in his absence, and they take comfort in knowing he is out there, and seek to do good deeds for his sake.

    Remind the class that the man is also a chaplain, so it stands...
