Structure:

While the novel is set in the imaginary country of Kangan in West Africa, much of Kangan is recognizably Nigerian. Among other things, Kangan’s political life is modeled on Nigeria’s successive military coups d’état in the late 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s.
