Students will be able to undersatnd how Laurie Halse Anderson’s own experiences in school affected her and how Melinda’s story came to her.

Structure:

As homework prior to this activity, assign students to read the “Laurie Halse Anderson Speaks About Speak” interview with the author at the back of the book as well as the “Speaking Out” article found here: http://scholar.lib.vt.edu/ejournals/ALAN/spring00/anderson.html.
