Jay Asher says he decided to use cassette tapes specifically because they are now considered an outdated form of technology. While this guide does not suggest students revert back to cassette tapes, several of the classroom activities in this guide call for innovative use of technology. For instance, the “Thematic Video” activity on Days 3-5 calls for students to create a video using iMovie or other software. Other activities ask students to record themselves and to write letters, which they can do using word processing software. Students can also use Prezi and PowerPoint to create presentations.
