About the Author

Richard Adams was born in 1920 in Berkshire, England. As a young adult, he attended Worcester College, Oxford. In 1940, when Britain went to war with Germany, Adams was drafted into the British Army and served in the Royal Army Service Corps for six years. His experiences in World War II went on to influence his writing, including Watership Down. Adams had two daughters with his wife Elizabeth, and it was to these girls that the story of Hazel and Fiver was first told. Adams spent some fruitless months sending the manuscript to uninterested publishers, until it was finally accepted by Rex Collings in 1972. To Adams surprise, it turned out to be an instant success.
